Report for Vietnam Service Learning Trip

The School of Information & Technology (SIT) of Republic Polytechnic organized a combined Service Learning Trip to Binh Duong (Vietnam) from 24^th September – 3^rd October. The trip was filled with many high and low moments and it served as a real eye-opener to many of the Republicans who went for the 10 day trip.

Some highlights of the trip would be the exchange program run in conjunction with Petrus Ky Middle School in Binh Duong, tour of the Vietnam Singapore industrial park, repairing and upgrading computer labs in Tan Uyen district, aiding in the construction of the foundation layer of a Kitchen in Tan Uyen district and teaching the College of Technology (Binh Duong) about Web & New Media; Facebook, application on Google Apps, Google Docs, Google Maps and exchanging experience in building e-commerce.

The one night exchange program with Petrus Ky Middle School was a pretty interesting activity for us as this has allowed us to have a chance to mingle and talk to students who are about secondary school age. We also took this opportunity to find out more about their culture as well as the environment that they have grown up in. The students were rather inquisitive and also took an interest to find out how Singapore is like and the education that we are currently receiving as well. This was also aided by the students being fluent in English and we managed to convey our message through with ease as compared to some of the other places where we visited and the locals did not understand English.

The whole Service Learning group was broken up into 2 teams, the Servicing team which would handle repairs and refurbishment to the computer lab in the Tan Uyen district and the New Media team which would do education and lessons of New Media to the College of Technology (Binh Duong). The group was split so that the agenda of the trip can be completed with greater efficiency as both objectives were given 3 days in total to be completed. The teams were headed by Julia and Jerry respectively.

The Service team was very efficient in the refurbishment of the lab as the team was committed to getting the work done on schedule and everyone chipped in to help one another. Be it their technical expertise in desktop hardware maintenance or setting up a server, everyone put their “know-how” to good use. This activity also gave some the opportunity to see what a desktop motherboard looks like! Apart from sweating bucket loads from the heat, everyone from the Service team felt accomplished when all the work was done and as they had completed the lab earlier than expected, they also had some time to visit the nearby orphanage to spend some time with the local children there. A very meaningful aspect of the trip for them.

The New Media team on the other hand had a more uphill challenge, which was to cover a very comprehensive lesson structure of Web & New media which was taken from our own C111 module and cram the fundamental aspects into a 3-day crash course for the youths in Binh Duong to make use of in their daily lives. I would say a large aspect of this course balanced on the way that we communicate with them in ensuring that what we speak, they understand. Thankfully, we had several students from our team who were conversant with Vietnamese and we managed to do the lessons with as little hiccups as possible. Our team has also faced several setbacks during the lessons, however we managed to overcome them by substituting and playing by ear. At the end of the 3^rd day, I would say that the lessons were fruitful and I feel that we have truly imparted a set of soft-skills for them to take home and empower them for their personal use in the future. Thus in the end, both teams accomplished their agenda and the outcome of the trip is a great success. Now with this complete, we managed to move onto the next part of the trip.

After completing the Service Learning aspect of the trip, the team then went on to do some sightseeing in the area, mainly, paying a visit to Dai Nam theme park, a tour of the historical Cu Chi tunnels and then finally heading back to spend 2 nights in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to have some well-deserved rest & relaxation as well as some intensive retail therapy before heading back home to Singapore.

The Cu Chi tunnels was a very astounding sight to behold firsthand as there is simply nothing like it anywhere else in the world that has the scale and magnitude as well as complexity as compared to the Cu Chi tunnels. At some points, you would even have to duck walk through the passageway underground as the tunnel is really that small and mind you, the tunnel was already enlarged for tourists to visit already! Imagine how tiny it must have been during the war! Personally I feel that any trip to Vietnam would be incomplete if you do not go there and have a glimpse of the Cu Chi tunnels. This also makes you feel awed by the sheer power of human perseverance and determination, that in 1968 and without modern day technology and aid to dig those tunnels, they had managed to dig 250km of it underground, some even going deeper than 3 storey’s underground. All this they had managed to do in less than 20 years. To me I feel that this is a feat that really commands respect for the Vietnamese during the war.

In HCMC itself, the team also spent some time to sightsee the different tourist attractions of the city apart from shopping to visit some places of interest such as the Reunification Palace of Vietnam; Bin Thanh market and the Saigon Notre-Dame.

In closure, everyone who attended this Service Leaning Trip has benefitted greatly, to achieve what could not be achieved in the classroom. This Service Learning Trip was certainly more than just an education of the mind, but truly an education of the heart as well.

apparently what we're doing here has aparently caught the local media new's attention (in a good way of course!)
The first picture was taken when we we're doing our cultural exchange program with the Petrus Ky Middle School in Vietnam.

I know that people are bugging for the photos for Cypher Camp 09 and some people are still confused about the Sentosa outing.

For the outing, it's on the 25th April, tentatively. As for the 2nd May, we are most probably be going to Sentosa. This is because there are some who cannot make it for this Saturday.

Alright, now for the photos, we thought about this long and hard. We thought of Flickr, Photobucket. But, I think the most popular thing now is Facebook.

Thanks again for making this year’s camp happen. Just to let everyone know, we’ll be going to Sentosa, 2^nd May, next Saturday. We’ll be meeting at HarbourFront MRT Station, Control Station. Dear students,

In preparation for the start of the next Academic Year on 20 April 2009, the Office of the Registrar would like to bring to your attention some important changes to the academic policies and regulations affecting all students. These changes will take effect from the beginning of the Academic Year. The main changes are:

1. Academic Calendar for AY2009/2010

The dates for the Academic Calendar for AY2009/2010 have been revised, and the current version of the calendar can be viewed at http://www.rp.sg/org/Student%20Handbook/Acad_Acad_Calendar_0910.aspx. Please take note especially that there will be 15 weeks of lessons (instead of 16 previously), and that no lessons will be conducted in Week 16.

2. Understanding Tests (UTs)

For each module, there will now be 3 UTs per semester (instead of 4 previously), called UT1, UT2 and UT3.

UT1 and UT2 will be held within the first 15 weeks of the semester when lessons are conducted, and will usually be scheduled at 4:00 pm. UT3 will be scheduled in Week 16, at dates and times which will be announced closer to the time.

UT1 and UT2 will each be of 45 minutes in duration, while UT3 will be between 60 and 90 minutes in duration, depending on the module.

With this change, UT3 for each module will be an opportunity for students to be tested on and to show their competence in the entire range of topics covered in the relevant module.

The UT Schedule for the semester will be released at the beginning of the semester, and can be viewed at http://www.rp.sg/org/Student%20Handbook/Acad_UT_Schedule.aspx after it has been published.

3. Daily Schedule for Classes and UTs

All classes will now begin at either 8:30 am, 9:15 am or 10:00 am. Classes are designated as Group A, Group B and Group C for this purpose, and the start time and daily schedule for each class will depend on the Group to which the respective module is designated. The daily schedule for Group A, Group B and Group C classes is shown below.

(For all modules, there will be NO classes in Week 16.)

^ - Group C modules will have the 3rd meeting end by 4:00 p.m. if students are taking UT on that day.

The Group for each class is part of the class code (which will be shown in LEO), with the Group letter shown the end of the code. For example, in “G101-3-W34K-A” the final letter “A” indicates that the class will be held according to the “Group A” schedule. Please wait for the class information to become available in LEO at the beginning of the semester to see which schedules apply for your classes.

Do note that the “Study Period” (previously known as the “Breakout”) refers to the time between the Meetings, and is intended mainly for students to do their work in preparation for the next Meeting.

This new daily schedule allows for the staggering of class start times as well as times for the Study Periods, so that any traffic congestion within and around the campus can be minimised and our facilities can be utilised more efficiently.

4. Module Grade Computation

As there will now be 15 lessons for each module (instead of 16 lessons previously), the computation of the Module Grade will involve the best 13 out of the total of 15 Daily Grades.

For UTs, since there will now only be three UTs, the computation of the Module Grade will involve all three UTs. Moreover, as UT3 is conducted at the end of the semester and involves a longer duration, there will be double weightage of UT3 compared with UT1 and UT2. In other words, the grades of the three UTs will be combined in the ratio 1 : 1 : 2 for UT1 : UT2 : UT3.

As the UTs are an important component of the assessment system, students need to sit for every UT. Absence from a UT will result in a failure for that UT (i.e. "X" grade and zero score), unless there are exceptional reasons for which a student is granted Leave of Absence (LOA).

Students who are absent from class or UT due to hospitalization, compassionate leave, or participation in approved competitions or other activities for Singapore or Republic Polytechnic may apply for LOA. If approved, allowances will be made for such absence. Absences for reasons that are not approved will not qualify for LOA, and students will be treated as absent. Medical Certificates do not automatically qualify for LOA, and all applications will be assessed on their merit. Frivolous cases or repeated cases without good reasons will be disallowed or subject to further investigation. 5. Abolishment of ‘N’ Grades

Previously, students who were continuously absent from classes for a certain number of weeks at the beginning of the semester would be given an ‘N’ Grade for the module. This grade is now no longer to be given with effect from AY2009/2010 Semester 1 onwards. All students who are enrolled for a module will now be graded according to their DG and UT grades as assigned, with absences resulting in a failure (i.e. "X" grade and zero score).

House of Lobsters cease operation.

It was rumored that they're bias against the students compared to staff. From what it's spread among the students, that sometimes, whenever student go there to eat, they'll "specially prepare" the table for them, taking out the table cloth and using lousier utensils. Some even say that the students were brought to the storeroom to have their meal.

Well, all these will be over as RP estates has announced, via the webmail, that they'll "cease operation".

Now, there leaves us one more thing the think about, what's next? Could we be having a another one of these restaurants? Or maybe something else, like say, Subway? Or Macs? We can only hope.

What are your thoughts on house of lobster and these rumors, or have you heard even worse rumors?

Cypher Camp 09

When the camp was first confirmed, it was going to be a 3D2N camp during end of March. Then it was said that having the camp to even happen would be difficult as the Principal of RP wants to have a combine camp with all the schools for all the year 1s. After some fighting, and some of the advisors lost a few eye lashes(crap), THE CAMP IS CONFIRMED! However, it would not be a 3D2N affair, where Cypher always has it's camps for 3D2N. It's going to be a 1.5 days, 2 days 1 night. It'll be on the 13th-14th of April. Planning has already begun and soon all you people (Yes helpers that's you) would be called in and help out in planning.

SO... Can't wait for the camp to happen.
